What accreditation actually means in Australia, which badges matter, and the five questions to ask before you hand over a deposit for an overseas holiday.
Australia deregulated travel agent licensing in 2014, which means anyone can call themselves a travel agent. Accreditation is now the only meaningful signal you have as a consumer, and most people don't know which badges mean anything.
IATA TIDS: a Travel Industry Designator Service number identifies the agency to airlines, hotels and cruise lines worldwide. It means suppliers recognise the business as a trade seller rather than an individual booking on your behalf. Ours is 96227946.
CLIA: Cruise Lines International Association membership means the agency is engaged with cruise-line trade training and has direct trade relationships with the cruise lines. For anything cruise-related, this is the badge to look for.
ATIA (formerly AFTA): the Australian Travel Industry Association runs the AAA accreditation scheme, which covers financial and conduct standards. Ask whether an agency is accredited and under whose ABN they trade.
Five questions to ask before paying a deposit: what is your ABN and registered company name, are deposits held in a trust or client account, is the quoted price in AUD and does it include international flights, what is the cancellation and refund schedule in writing, and who do I call at 2am in-destination.
Red flags: prices quoted only in USD without an AUD equivalent, deposits requested via bank transfer to a personal account, no physical Australian business address, pressure tactics with 'today only' pricing on custom trips, and no written terms.
Why using an accredited agent beats booking direct: supplier relationships get you room upgrades and priority in disruptions, you have one human accountable for the whole trip, and when a flight is cancelled at midnight in Colombo someone else fixes it while you sleep.
