Egypt Travel Guide for Australians: Pyramids, Nile Cruises & Hidden Gems

Beyond the pyramids — what it really costs, how safe it is, and the experiences that make Egypt one of the most underrated destinations for Aussies.

Egypt is having a moment with Australian travellers, and for good reason. The new Grand Egyptian Museum (the largest archaeological museum on earth) has opened near the Pyramids, flight connections via Dubai are faster than ever, and the Aussie dollar goes surprisingly far.

Getting there: Flights from Australia via Emirates (Dubai) or Qatar Airways (Doha) run $800-1,200 AUD return. Flight time is 18-22 hours with one stop. Best time to visit: October to April when temperatures are comfortable (20-28°C vs 40°C+ in summer).

The Pyramids of Giza are non-negotiable, obviously. But here's what most tourists miss: go at sunrise with a private guide ($50-80 AUD for 3 hours). You'll beat the bus tours and get photos without 500 people in the background. The camel ride is touristy but genuinely fun — just negotiate hard ($15-20 AUD is fair, not the $80 they'll start at).

A Nile cruise is the best way to see Upper Egypt. Three to four nights sailing from Luxor to Aswan, stopping at Karnak, Valley of the Kings, Kom Ombo, and Philae. Prices range from $80/night (basic boat) to $300/night (luxury dahabiya). We recommend the mid-range — around $150/night for excellent service without the crowd of a 200-passenger ship.

Cairo beyond the pyramids: The Egyptian Museum (old one — still incredible), Khan El Khalili bazaar (haggle for everything), and Islamic Cairo's medieval streets. For food, try koshari (Egypt's national dish, $1 AUD) and head to Abou Tarek — it's a Cairo institution.

Safety: Egypt is safe for tourists. The areas visitors frequent (Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Red Sea coast) have significant security presence. The Sinai Peninsula has travel advisories for some areas, but Sharm El Sheikh and Dahab are well-established and secure resort towns.
