Sigiriya, Kandy, Udawalawe safari, the blue tea train and a five-star Galle finish. What an 18-day Sri Lanka tour actually costs Australians in AUD, and the smartest route order.
Sri Lanka is the best value long-haul cultural trip available to Australians in 2027. In 18 days you can cover ancient cities, hill-country tea plantations, leopard safari and a beach finish without a single long internal flight — the whole island is roughly the size of Tasmania.
The route that works, north to south: Negombo arrival, Anuradhapura and Mihintale for the ancient stupas, Sigiriya Rock Fortress at sunrise, Kandy for the Temple of the Tooth, Nuwara Eliya via the tea estates, the Ella blue-train leg, Udawalawe for elephants and leopard spotting, then finishing five-star in Galle. Doing it in this order means you climb before the heat and end on a beach, not a bus.
Getting there in AUD: return flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth to Colombo run A$1,100–$1,900 economy depending on season, usually via Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok. Direct-ish routings through Singapore are worth the extra A$120 for the shorter layover.
On-ground costs: a private driver-guide for the full 18 days is the single best money you can spend — expect A$55–$85 per day including fuel. Entry tickets add up more than people expect: Sigiriya around A$50, Anuradhapura A$40, Temple of the Tooth A$8, Udawalawe safari A$60–$100 per jeep.
Best time to travel: for a full north-to-south loop, January to March and July to September are the sweet spots. The island has two monsoons hitting opposite coasts, which is why a west-to-south finish works nearly year-round if the route is built properly.
What a fully guided deluxe version costs: our 18-day Deluxe Ultimate Sri Lanka North to South Discovery, operated by Luxury Escapes Tours with Udawalawe safari, Kandy and a five-star Galle stay, runs from A$4,166 to A$4,926 per person land-only, with departures bookable through to December 2027.
Common mistakes: trying to add Maldives as an afterthought without checking the Colombo connection times, booking the tea train without reserved seating, and underestimating drive times in the hill country (60km can genuinely take three hours).
